[Special Events] Manolo Valdes Monumental Sculpture at The New York Botanical Garden
Last weekend, I had the pleasure of viewing Manolo Valdes's "Monumental Sculpture" exhibition (September 22, 2012 through May 26, 2013) at The New York Botanical Garden. The entire experience was absolutely magical. I'd liken it to Alice in Wonderland. The above images were my favorite sculptures from the exhibition, with wonders around every turn.
The sculptures were at once contemporary and ancient; the dramatic forms and shapes of the headdresses were specifically drawn from the Botanical Garden collections. Six of the seven sculptures drew upon the Garden's ferns, leaves and butterflies for expression inspiration. I've never seen a better collaboration between sculpture and garden; the exhibition was incredible.
The New York Botanical Garden is a museum of plants located at Bronx River Parkway and Fordham Road. It is easy to reach by Metro-North Railroad or subway. The Garden is open year-round, Tuesday through Sunday and Monday federal holidays, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The best way to enjoy the Garden is with the All-Garden Pass, which includes admission to the grounds as well as to seasonal gardens, exhibitions, and attractions such as the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, Everett Children’s Adventure Garden, and Tram Tour. For more information and to purchase tickets, please visit nybg.org or call 718.817.8700.
